Over the last few months, I've been looking at different ways to apply data compression to geospatial data (mostly USGS Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF elevation products). My focus has been on "non-lossy" data compression (techniques that preserve the full precision of the original data). I haven't done anything ground breaking (so far). Mostly, I've been following the work of Kidner and Smith. But I've had a bit of success and have obtained slightly better compression ratios than GeoTIFF and NetCDF. I have posted some Java code and a couple of wiki pages describing what I've done.

This topic is, of course, a specialty implementation, and I don't expect a lot of people to be interested. But if anyone would like to read about the results, you can see my notes at

Also, I am looking for ideas and suggestions. So if anyone has something to say, I'd be interested in hearing from you.
